Our adventure in Fuerteventura

A Winter Escape to Fuerteventura

There’s nothing quite like swapping the cold, grey skies of the UK for the golden sands and warm breezes of Fuerteventura. Our holiday to this stunning Canary Island was everything we needed: sunshine, adventure, and a chance to truly unwind. From the moment we landed, the island’s unique beauty struck us. Fuerteventura’s landscape is raw and rugged, with volcanic terrain stretching as far as the eye can see, softened by endless beaches and crystal-clear waters. During this winter escape to Fuerteventura, we explored, relaxed, and made memories that will stay with us forever.

Island Adventures

We kicked off our trip by diving headfirst into Fuerteventura’s stunning scenery. A definite highlight was our journey to Playa de Cofete, a remote, unspoiled beach in the Jandía Natural Park. Navigating dirt trails in a hired jeep made getting there an adventure in itself, but the effort was worth it. The wild beauty of the beach, framed by dramatic cliffs, was breathtaking.

Another unforgettable experience was hiking Calderón Hondo Volcano. This short but rewarding trail led us to views that were nothing short of spectacular. Along the way, we spotted curious little Moorish squirrels. They added a touch of charm to the rugged volcanic landscape, happily accepting sips of water from us.

Island hopping

Our adventures also took us beyond Fuerteventura to nearby Lanzarote. From the green lagoon of Lago Verde to the dramatic coastal cliffs of Los Hervideros, Lanzarote was equally mesmerizing. A bus tour through Timanfaya National Park, with its active volcano and geysers of steam, was a thrilling way to learn about the island’s fiery history.

Beach Bliss

Of course, no trip to Fuerteventura would be complete without plenty of time on its beaches. Whether we were relaxing under the sun at Corralejo Grandes Playas or braving the wind at the famous Popcorn Beach—where the shore is covered with white algae fossils that look like popcorn—the beaches here never disappointed.

We loved how every beach offered something different, from the tranquil waters perfect for swimming to the wilder spots where the waves crashed dramatically against the shore. And yes, there were a few spontaneous dips in the ocean—naked swims included!

Wildlife Wonders

One of the most magical parts of the trip was our dolphin-watching boat tour. Spotting a pod of Atlantic spotted dolphins up close was a dream come true. Their playful energy and graceful movements were incredible to witness. We also got lucky enough to see a Risso’s dolphin, a rarer and shyer species, which felt like such a privilege.

Local Flavours and Favourites

Fuerteventura didn’t just feed our sense of adventure—it fed our bellies, too. We discovered Amarena Café, a cozy spot where cappuccinos and avocado toast quickly became part of our daily routine. We also found some great vegan eats, including a charming pizzeria and the delicious offerings at Happy Cactus in El Cotillo.

One of our favorite evenings involved grabbing pizzas, heading to the beach, and dining under the stars. Moments like that reminded us how the simplest things can often be the most special.

Relaxation and Reflection

While we packed our days with activities, we made sure to take time to relax and soak up the island’s slower pace of life. Some days were spent lounging by the beach, enjoying ice cream, or playing crazy golf. Even cleaning the hire car became a fun part of the journey!

As the holiday came to an end, we spent our final day basking in the sunshine, savoring delicious coffee, and taking one last dip in the ocean. It was bittersweet to leave, but we felt so grateful for everything the island gave us.

Home Sweet Home

Returning to a chilly Manchester was a stark contrast to the warmth of Fuerteventura, but being greeted by Coco made it all worthwhile. Her happy wagging tail reminded us that no matter how far we travel, there’s no place like home.
